What is lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is the abnormal accumulation of a protein-rich fluid in the interstitium, which can cause chronic inflammation if left untreated. It’s a common and serious condition affecting millions worldwide, to which there currently is no cure. It can cause long-term physical and psychosocial consequences. This condition can continue to progress if left untreated, and the cosmetic deformities are difficult to hide. It can affect the extremities, trunk, abdomen, head, neck and external genitalia. It can be primary (where there is a developmental abnormality of the lymphatic system) or secondary (where there is a known insult to the lymphatic system like surgery, cancer treatment, infection, venous insufficiency or immobility). With the right specialised care, lymphoedema can be effectively managed to reduce swelling, improve comfort and protect long-term health.
How Carla can help
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) — gentle manual treatment technique to encourage lymphatic flow, and educating the patient in self-drainage techniques.
- Compression therapy — bandaging tailored to your condition and ordering of compression garments with trusted orthotists.
- Decongestive exercises — educating the patient on specific exercises that further assist with volume reductions achieved during the intensive phase of CDT.
- Skin and nail care education — hygiene and moisturising guidance, as our skin and nails are the barriers to environmental pathogens.
Support after cancer treatment and surgery
- Assisting patients during the recovery period — whether struggling with cording, restricted range of motion in the affected region, reduced strength, scar tissue and/or screening for lymphoedema if lymph nodes were removed.
